“Right now, I’m really fixated on what it’s been like to be here,” said Hawley, a UW-Madison graduate student in printmaking, who was selected by Ian’s Pizza to create an original work on a 160-square-foot wall in its new Downtown restaurant.

More information:

STUDENT LOAN DEBT TOPS 1 TRILLION DOLLARS on April 25th

Are you one of the millions with student loan debt? Then join people all over the U.S. to mark this day…after all, we’ve earned it with enough money in loans to surpass national credit card debt!

SIGN THE WALL OF DEBT!

WHEN: Wednesday, April 25th, 11am-2pm

WHERE: Library Mall, UW-Madison Campus

WHAT: Write your name, message, and amount of debt on the Wall. We’ll be handing out art supplies and information all afternoon during passing time, and in Library Mall. Please encourage your friends, students, and co-workers to pass through Library Mall too.

WHY: The higher education system in the United States is in crisis. College tuition has gone up more than 400% since the 1980′s, an increase that has far outpaced inflation or household income. Corporations and unaccountable administrators are turning colleges and universities from sites of higher education into debt factories for Wall Street speculators. Tuition increases year after year, forcing students to choose between their education and crushing debt. As a college education becomes more important, it becomes less and less affordable.

As the students, teachers, and researchers of higher education, we understand the real reasons we’re on campus. And as workers, we understand the importance of leaving college with skills and knowledge, not with massive debt. We demand an affordable education and a better future! Join us to convey this message to the nation!

Mark Todd: Like many kids raised in the 70’s, Mark was influenced at an early age by Star Wars and comic books. Unlike many kids, he grew up just a few miles from the Vegas strip, it’s neon and glitz looming over the city. He graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and currently lives and works in the Los Angeles area with his wife, artist Esther Pearl Watson, their daughter Lili and Mr. Pickles, a lovely French Bulldog.

Esther Pearl Watson: Esther grew up in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Her family moved often since her father’s hobby of building huge flying saucers out of scrap metal and car engines didn’t always sit well with the neighbors. Esther’s pieces are often overtly narrative, clear but mysterious, scenes of houses or figures, ornamented with snippets of prose telling just enough to get the viewer’s own imagination engaged and wanting to know more. Some are about family and some about places, but all have a rich interior life. Her works without words are just as suggestive as a story, also exerting a deep emotional pull. Her work has been exhibited nationally and collected by Matt Groening, Cindy Sherman, David Byrne, Megan Mullally and Morgan Spurlock.

Visiting Artists - Mark Todd & Esther Watson

Visiting Artist - Art Shay, Photographer

Talk:
Wednesday, May 2
4:30-5:45pm

Inspired by Foucault’s concept ofheterotopic spaces, we use formal elements of projection, installation, and sculpture to examine whether autobiographical memory forms a kind of intimate, internal heterotopia.
Our aim is to blur the line between Foucault’s understanding of heterotopias as socially and historically defined counter-sites and a more intimate, alternative space of autobiographical memory as a place of inner refuge and reconstruction. How do internal spaces of memory interact with social and historical counter-sites? How is our autobiographical constitution of self-hood influenced by heterotopic spaces? How can we define autobiographical memory as a counter-site? We aim for this piece to represent the intimate heterotopic spaces we’re exploring. At the same time, the cube becomes its own heterotopic space, to be entered by the viewer at free will and to be experienced as a counter-site to its surrounding.
